Fabrizio speaking at AI Summit

September 24, 2026 Philosophy

A man in profile, thinking.

On how UMD can make AI serve the public good.

October 1, Fabrizio Cariani is down on K Street at the Washington Post Live Center, giving a presentation at the AI Edge Summit, an event sponsored by our University in collaboration with the Washington Post. He is one of two speakers chosen by UMD, the other being Balaji Padmanabhan, Director of the UMD Center for AI in Business. Writes our Provost Jennifer King Rice, "This year’s summit will explore the growing debate over the pace of AI development and the impact of the fast-moving technology on cybersecurity, the workforce and the next frontiers of robotics. UMD will bring its strong perspective on human-centered ethics to the discussion. The programming will feature editorial segments with influential policymakers, innovative executives, and top experts, booked and produced by WP Live." Other speakers at the event include Cecilia Elena Rouse, President of the Brookings Institution, Sean Cairncross, White House National Cyber Director; Todd Young, Republican Senator from Indiana; and several CEOs from the AI industry. This event comes one year after the similar Washington Post Global AI Summit, held last year in New York City, which featured President Darryll Pines and Director of AIM, Hal Daumé III.
