Weaving together innovative research with outstanding mentorship.

Congratulations to Professor of Linguistics and Affliliate Professor of Philosophy Valentine Hacquard, who has been honored by the University as a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. The award honors members of the Maryland faculty – this year six total, across the university – who "have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement as well as outstanding accomplishments as teachers. This program recognizes those who have led the way in both areas and who thus serve as models of excellence for the faculty of a top research university." Proposed by their department, and supported by several letters of reference from both students and scholarly peers at other universities, nominees are reviewed by a panel of former Distinguished Scholar-Teachers, and approved by the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs. The award will be officially bestowed at the Fall Convocation, September 9, 2026. Valentine joins Lindley Darden and Frederick Suppe in the ranks of DSTs, along with four past winners in Linguistics: Howard Lasnik, Paul Pietroski, Jeff Lidz and Colin Phillips.
