Dr. Máté Veres to Speak on Early Stoicism and the Issue of Expertise
Please join the Classics Department in welcoming Máté Veres, who will be delivering a talk entitled "The Psychology of Expertise in Early Stoicism," on Thursday, December 7, at 4 pm.
The talk will look at the Stoic evidence concerning the transformation of expertise from foolishness to wisdom. Wisdom adds to expertise not only the unfailing motivation to act in accordance with the prescriptions of the relevant field. Rather, wisdom plays the role in determining when it is appropriate, all things considered, to act on the demands of a specific expertise.
Dr. Veres is a Research Fellow (SNSF Ambizione) at the University of Geneva’s Department of Philosophy and an Affiliated Researcher at the University of Gothenburg’s Department of Philosophy. This semester, he is a residential fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University, right in our neigborhood.
